Welcome to Venturefest West Midlands 2021, which continues to bring together regional businesses, universities, science parks and business support organisations.

This event, like so many others in the last year, has been translated into a virtual one but that has not changed the Steering Group’s objective of promoting connectivity and contact to drive the delivery of new innovative products and services to the marketplace in and from the West Midlands.

The restrictions imposed in order to control Covid-19 pandemic have changed the way we all live, work and play. Hopefully as the vaccines are rolled out a new normal will be created that means we can blend the best bits of past ways with some of the new habits we have developed in the last year. Crises have always been drivers of innovation and in this the Covid-19 pandemic is no different. The application of digital technologies has advanced five years in a matter of months. Life science technologies have created vaccines in 10 months whereas previously that would have taken a decade. ‘Necessity is the mother of invention’ and the crisis has stimulated innovation and has been characterised by people stepping up to the plate to deliver in all sorts of ways.

Dr David J Hardman MBE

Chair Venturefest West Midlands 2021 Steering Group

MD of Bruntwood SciTech - Birmingham

Our region has responded, with engineering, healthcare and digital service solutions. Businesses have pivoted to address new markets, for them, to meet new  and immediate demands. New products have been generated, while existing products and services repurposed to address supply chain pressures. As such, the opportunity to innovate has been seen to come out of the crisis.

Other sessions during the morning will focus on Opportunities in Green Growth and  Creativity, Technology & innovation alongside a series of breakout rooms that will enable themed virtual networking.

Our aim is that the virtual Venturefest West Midlands 2021 still offers the means of delivering new connections for you. As we look at the growing vaccine-enabled light at the end of the Covid-19 tunnel we need the region’s innovators and entrepreneurs to help lead us out of the associated economic crisis. A start will be to be inspired to deliver high-growth businesses based on knowledge-economy products and services, see the crisis as an opportunity to innovate.
